Drowning

October 26th, 2009
was the day I realized
you never really know how deep you  will fall
until you watch a friend drown
or how far you are willing to dive
to keep a friend alive
October 26, 2009
the day I learned how sorry you can be
for all the things you did not see
I'm sorry that I didn't see the war within
or that you were sinking deeper and deeper
becoming as distant as far away as the ocean floor
I'm sorry that I didn't see the masks
please forgive me
for we were so young
that I didn't yet understand life could have a setting sun.
I'm sorry that once I did see
I didn't throw you a life raft
because you see there was only one
and I too was drowning
so I held on tight
while I searched for somewhere to swim
although I am sorry for a lot
I am not sorry that I never let go
because life showed me something worth living for
I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
the joke that life played
by showing its cruel irony
when the waves came crashing in on the darkest of nights
to show me the brightest of light
which helped me swim to shore
and throw up a flare
to rescue me from myself
a piece about regret and the loss of a friend and losing myself

This is so true, sometimes you have to pick yourself up before you can help others. I'm just sorry it sometimes has to mean choosing yourself over them. Sometimes you just can't see things before they're there... Well this is really beautiful....
